When Hurricane Irene devastated Vermont, we became Vermont Strong! We didn't wait for FEMA to show up to hand out blankets and food stamps. That next day, we worked knee deep in the rivers with wheelbarrows and shovels to get Vermont back on the map. Even though 6 bridges had been totally torn away in the 30 miles between Brattleboro and Stratton, the road was open again in two weeks. Two years later, tens of thousands of Vermonters proudly display "We are Vermont Strong" license plates.

Neat & Tidy: How to organize your Business & Sales Planning
Just about ready for winta'. As part of my never-ending "drive-1,000-miles-a-week" travel schedule, late Thursday night and Friday morning found me in the towns of Colchester and Williston, VT. I thank the inventor of GPS every single trip when I head off with absolutely no idea where I'm going other than... "It's north (or some other direction) somewhere." A Mobil station dinner and a Hampton Inn breakfast later, I found that the management team at the Colchester and Williston plants were truly engaging, have complex opportunities, and I'm looking forward to our two day planning session in December.

Where do we fit into the Scale of the Universe...and Sales!
I spend most of every day, most weeks (except a couple on the NH beach and a couple at Stratton snowboarding), every month and every quarter thinking about and working in the professions of Sales & Marketing.

How the heck can I get more sales from my team?...and Sales
Just finished one of our two and a half day Sales Management Boot Camps, and right now I'm in the zone of somewhere between exhausted and excited.

Jack McAvoy, Lifeguard & Rock-Solid Marketing Guy!
A senior marketing executive at Parametric Technology, Jack and I met a few years ago out of our common love of caring for the beach. Jack's been the senior lifeguard in Wallis Sands for a long time and is as passionate about taking care of this beach (Rated in the Top 5 cleanest beaches in the U.S. ) and its visitors as he is about the practice of marketing in the rapidly changing ecosystem of 2013.

My favorite blogger, especially at this time of year as we prepare to celebrate the 4th, is Benjamin Franklin.
An amazing patriot, which is why I always tie Franklin to the 4th. An inventor, an entrepreneur, the creator of Poor Richard's Almanac (the leading blog of his day), an extraordinary statesman, a lover of good food and wine, and provider of wonderfully simple quotes such as...

I was sitting with the senior team at one of our most successful customers last Friday, and we were prepping for an upcoming sales and marketing planning meeting later this week.
Status: Solid first half performance
Status: Great processes & people
Question: How does everything fit for the 2nd half?

I open each semester at Tufts by asking my students what my job is. After a couple of awkward minutes including... "to teach us about marketing", to which I respond, "That might be a problem because I don't know that much about marketing", my real answer is..."to make sure that you get the highest paying jobs that you're going to find to be the most rewarding". And, at the end of the day, that's really the most important result from any university.

The semester is over. Grades are in... without complaints this semester. Commencement was more than a week ago. Summer is lurking around somewhere, but not here on the beach unless you like 52 degrees, which clearly beats the 12" of snow in VT on Sunday.
